PC-Based Equipment Simulators: Cost-Effective Hands-On Training Tools

The new Wheeled Material Handler Personal Simulator puts you at the controls of a typical wheeled material handler equipped with an articulated boom, four-tine grapple, elevating cab, and outriggers.

Many different kinds of situations typical of (metal) scrap recycling yards are presented, in order to address the training needs of a wide variety of customers using different operational practices.

You can either use your own PC or choose the convenience of our PC bundle with the Simlog software already installed, licensed, and ready to go in English or French.

Module 2: Line Following

The objective of this module is to learn to position the grapple so as to follow a trajectory that takes the form of a straight line. Driving is disabled for this module to ensure that only the swing, boom and stick controls are used to guide the grapple along the line.

Module 3: Grapple Positioning

The objective of this Simulation Module is to learn to position and orient the grapple of the material handler with respect to a target, while carefully avoiding obstacles when driving.

Module 4: Container Loading 1

The objective of this module is to learn to position and orient the material handler with respect to a stockpile of scrap material, and to load that material with the grapple into the container (on the ground or on the truck trailer), while avoiding obstacles when driving.

Wheeled Material Handler Software Description

The wheeled material handler simulator is instructionally designed to maximize trainee learning. Trainees can progress at their own pace without supervision. Simulation lessons begin with simple tasks and progresses to sessions where they learn best practices for handling more complex tasks.

Tracking Results

Key Performance Indicators measure how quickly and how carefully the simulated work is performed. With 31 unique Performance Indicators, feedback is diagnostic, instead of just a consolidated pass/fail score. They include execution time, productivity, grapple height and angle when driving, cabin elevation when driving and when handling material, and counting many kinds of collisions (grapple, ground, undercarriage, etc.).

A variety of incorrect operating conditions will trigger “Procedure Errors,” such as driving “out of bounds.” Finally, conditions related to safety receive special attention: causing the wheeled material handler or a container to overturn, will trigger a “Fatal Error” and the simulation immediately stops.

Software Pricing

Please contact us for pricing of a commercial software license for the wheeled material handler simulator. Even small accidents due to inexperience can cost thousands of dollars in replacement parts and downtime on an actual machine - far in excess of your investment in this training tool.

This simulator represents an excellent training value and helps improve the safety of your material handler operators and the people who work in close proximity to them. Consider it a priceless investment in the health and wellness of your workers.

Software Description

Wheeled Material Handler Simulator Controls

This simulator puts you at the controls of a typical wheeled material handler equipped with an articulated boom, four-tine grapple, elevated cab and outriggers. It presents a variety of working situations that address multiple types of customers and operating practices.

Replica Controls

Simulator Controls

Wheeled Material Handler simulator portable 8-button controls with brackets

Replica Controls for the Wheeled Material Handler Personal Simulator feature industrial strength components suitable for both tabletop mounting and Simlog’s Operator Chair. If you are a Simlog customer, then you may be able to re-use the Replica Controls that you already have. To learn more, please contact Simlog.

Simulator controls begin with two “Multi-Purpose” Replica Controls joysticks with 8 push-buttons, that can be used with many other Personal Simulators. Simlog can also provide table-top mounting brackets to bring the joysticks down from tabletop height to the sides of an ordinary chair, to better mimic the positioning of operator controls in the cabin of real wheeled material handlers.

To complete the Replica Controls, add the Logitech “G920 Driving Force Racing Wheel” steering wheel and a three-pedal unit, along with the “G920 Driving Force Shifter.”

Custom Travel Cases for Replica Controls

For all setups, Simlog's Custom Travel Case makes transportation easy.

Key Features

  • Made-to-measure, with dedicated slots for levers, joysticks, pedals, steering wheel, and table-top mounting brackets

  • Space for a laptop PC, cables, and documentation

  • Pull-out handle, with multiple positions

  • Wheels (casters)

  • Cases are "stackable," for easy transport.

Specifications

  • Overall dimensions: 30 (76cm) x 24 (61cm) x 19 (50cm)

  • Approximate weight: 50 lbs. (23 kg) when empty, up to 100 lbs. (46 kg) when full (depending upon the Replica Controls.)

Operator Chair

Simlog’s Operator Chair with industrial controls offers a superior simulation experience to train operators, thanks to an authentic operator seat with consoles for the left and right hands and an adjustable steering column. All the components are mounted on an industrial platform with casters, for easy portability.

Two joystick models are available.

The “Multi-Purpose” joysticks with 8 push-buttons, shown on the left, can be used with many other Personal Simulators.

For additional realism, Simlog also offers industrial USB joysticks equipped with “OEM” control handles that have 3 push-buttons as shown on the right, along with an “OEM” lever to control the outriggers.

In both cases, the two joysticks are mounted on the consoles for left and right hands. There are also two toggle switches to control the parking brake and the outriggers. The industrial steering wheel is mounted on a column that easily telescopes and pivots to numerous angles. The Operator Chair also includes three industrial pedals.

If you already have a Simlog Operator Chair that you are using with some other Personal Simulator, then you may be able to re-configure that Operator Chair by purchasing additional elements.

Vibration System

Vibration increases the realism of our Personal Simulators by adding physical (tactile) feedback to the audio and visual, making the experience more “immersive” at little additional cost, especially when compared to a motion platform.

The vibration that you feel is generated from the simulation software’s audio system as things happen. Engine idling, collisions with obstacles, digging virtual terrain, etc. can all be seen, heard and experienced! Adding vibration improves the realism of the simulation and makes the simulator-based training more compelling, encouraging trainees to be more serious and learn more carefully.

For our Operator Chairs, Simlog offers a vibration system that includes the “ButtKicker Simulation Kit” plus special mounting for the operator seat. The “ButtKicker” is a low-frequency sound transducer equipped with its own amplifier and “volume” controller to change the “force” of the vibration created by the simulation software sounds.
