Silver Series Web-based Training:

Transporting Equipment

Transporting Equipment is part of VISTA's growing family of Silver Series online training programs, 1-2 hours in length and delivered via the web. They are ideal for new operator training.

This training program provides trainees with best practices for securing and transporting equipment on trailers. A significant percentage of fatal accidents involving heavy equipment occur when loading and unloading from a trailer. Accidents can also happen when transporting equipment, if it is not properly secured to the trailer.

This program is based upon the provisions of the 2006 (most recent) USA Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration 49 CFR, Part 393 regulation. It will also help your crews to reduce or eliminate an all too common source of equipment mishaps.

It includes these topics:

  • The types of trailers used to haul heavy equipment
  • How to read a trailer load capacity plate
  • How to safely load and unload equipment from trailers
  • Equipment tie-down methods and procedures
  • How to calculate the Aggregate Working Load Limit (AWLL)
  • Best practices when hauling on public roadways

This program contains seven lessons:

Lesson 1 - The trailer: This lesson covers the types of trailers used to haul equipment, the location of the data plate and helps trainees understand how to prepare the load.

Lesson 2 - Loading: This lesson emphasizes the importance of inspecting the equipment prior to loading it on the trailer, and proper processes and procedures used to safely load the equipment onto the trailer.

Lesson 3 - Securement: This lesson covers typical locations of securement points on trailers, and emphasizes the importance of only using authorized securement points when tying the equipment down.

Lesson 4 - Tie-down components: This lesson focuses on the importance of proper chain use, emphasizes the importance of inspecting all chains prior to use and covers the three major binding methods available: ratchets, levers and straps.

Lesson 5 - Tie-down procedures: This lesson describes the purpose of a tie-down system. It also helps trainees understand the "aggregate working load limit" and how to determine it. In addition, it covers "rated capacity" and "load limits," and helps trainees understand why both are critical to trailer safety. Finally, it illustrates common tie-down methods.

Lesson 6 - Specialty loads: This lesson covers safe securement equipment and procedures for specialty loads, including cable reels, shovel hardware and pipe.

Lesson 7 - On the road: This lesson covers what to do after the equipment is safely loaded on the trailer, including what to do before driving away, the importance of a final walk-around of the equipment and the trailer, what must be checked and when during transport and what to do after the load has been delivered.

Does your operator training include the safe loading, transportation and unloading of equipment? If not, you could be facing a major safety risk. Avoid costly and potentially dangerous mishaps by investing in this training program.

Trainers: Before you begin classroom or field training, why not provide your trainees with a solid foundation of knowledge about the equipment and how to operate it safety? This web-based training course can be delivered any time, anywhere you have access to a high-speed internet connection.
