Skid Steer Loader - Basic Operation & Safety
Skid Steer Loader - Basic Operation & Safety is part of VISTA's growing family of Silver Series online training programs, 1-2 hours in length and delivered via the web. They are ideal for new operator training.
Skid steer loaders can do a tremendous amount of work in the hands of a skilled operator. But they can also do a great amount of damage and can cause injury if not handled with care and respect. In seven concise lessons, this training program shows your trainees how to be safe and productive when operating one of these versatile machines in construction and mining applications.
Course content is focused on seven key areas:
Design features and components: Before trainees can learn how to perform common tasks with a skid steer loader, they must first understand the major components and controls of the machine and their function.
Safety and pre-use inspection: This lesson discusses the importance of personal protective equipment (PPE), the main components that need to be checked as part of a pre-use inspection and how to board the machine safely.
Start-up, controls and testing: This lesson teaches how to start up the skid steer loader, discusses common warning lamps, and reviews how to test the operator controls and back-up alarm.
Machine operation: This lesson will help trainees understand the functions of the operator controls, how to travel forward, backward and make turns, and how to understand the capacity of the machine.
Filling the bucket: One of the primary duties of the skid steer loader is moving material in its bucket. This lesson explains how to attach and detach the bucket, how to use the bucket controls of the machine and teaches the basics of filling the bucket to capacity.
Carrying and dumping loads: Once the bucket of the machine is loaded, the next tasks are to carry it somewhere and dump it. Both tasks can be challenging if not performed correctly. This lesson focuses on how to identify and react to challenging job site conditions, how to safely carry and dump a load, plus the basics of three common job site tasks - digging or excavating material, backfilling and leveling, and back dragging the bucket to level material.
Machine shut down: At the end of the day, it's time to shut down the nimble skid steer loader. This lesson explains a typical shutdown procedure, and also explains how to properly let the engine cool down to prevent damage from hot spots. It also provides guidelines on when and how to refuel the machine.
Trainers: Before you begin classroom or field training, why not provide your trainees with a solid foundation of knowledge about the equipment and how to operate it safety? This web-based training course can be delivered any time, anywhere you have access to a high-speed internet connection.
